Grand homespun portier

Portiere, one of a pair. Woven panels. Homespun natural linen. Cutwork, crochet lace embroidered details with two handmade tassels. C.1900.  Arts & Crafts era minimalism at its finest. I'm not sure they are American made, but the minimalist nature of its overall presentation really lends itself to early American arts and crafts.

Unique applique tapestry

Wall Hanging. Woven linen. Decorated with a variety of individually appliqued, outlined, and hand colored unidentified symbolic devices. Attribution Uncertain. 108” x 6’

The seven repeated elements most resemble designs found in Hindu, Southeast Asian, and Himalayan artworks. This early piece of art was created for just that purpose was hung on the wall in very large area. Whether for social gatherings or special occasions this piece meant a lot to many people and I was lucky to get it in the south of France in 2009.

Like their silk counterparts, wool damasks were also reversible, Wool damasks were often glazed to achieve a shiny finish to more resemble silk damask. This practical fabric was extremely popular for clothing throughout Europe. The use of wool created a hardy fabric with a distinctive design.

Art Deco print with appliqué border

Panel. Woven cotton. Printed with an abstract geometric floral and fan repeat, with contrasting applique border. Attributed to France. C.1930’s 7.5’ x 4’

Art Deco artists often looked to Africa for inspiration. There are implied tribal references in the pattern-work, and in the abstract, gestural, cut out black cotton. I love unusual pieces as they are usually individual works of art. This is definitely a French piece and produce sometime after the turn of the century.

Bold jacquard woven panel

Jacquard woven. Polychrome Wools. Symmetrical, non-specific heraldic repeat with assorted oversized medallions. French. 1860-80. 9’ x 4.5'

The juxtaposition of light and dark color fields resulted in greater luminosity to grand interiors prior to electric lighting due to their reflective contrast. Very colorful and very large woven tapestry. Early symbolism with early 1800 designs.
